Volunteering at Shamba Ya Amani Farm: Feeding the Body and Soul
Shamba Ya Amani, which means "Farm of Peace" in Swahili, is an urban farm in Houston, Texas, that is working to create a more just and sustainable food system. The farm grows vegetables, fruits, and herbs, raises bees, and offers educational programs to the community.
I recently had the opportunity to volunteer at Shamba Ya Amani, and it was an incredibly rewarding experience. I spent the morning helping to plant seeds, weed the garden, and harvest vegetables. It was hard work, but it was also a lot of fun to be working outdoors and getting my hands dirty.
But Shamba Ya Amani is more than just a farm. It is a place where people come together to build community and learn about sustainable agriculture. I met so many amazing people while I was volunteering, and I learned a lot about the importance of urban farming.
If you are looking for a way to get involved in your community and make a difference, I highly recommend volunteering at Shamba Ya Amani. It is a great way to get some exercise, learn new skills, and meet new people. And most importantly, it is a way to help create a more just and sustainable food system for all.
