Rice University High School Coding Bootcamp - August 2021

I attended Rice University’s three week summer program that covered introductory programming topics in 2021. The topics included:

Computer Science (CS) is distinct from computer literacy because it is more concerned with computer design than computer use. For example, coding is a skill one would learn in a CS course while creating a document or slideshow presentation using an existing program is a skill one would discover in a computer literacy course. Computers are part of our lives now. With automation, the digitalization of workplaces, and low-code or no-code initiatives, computer science is being pushed to the masses as if it is part of computer literacy. Learning how these algorithms are created or could be enhanced will make a big difference in your future.

Module 1: HTML & CSS

Module 2: Javascript & JQuery

Module 3: Hackathon!

Each session, I practiced new skills alongside some other high school peers by working through sample coding activities, building up to our final group project. Here's a sneak peek at our schedule:

Online Art Portfolio Coding Project

By: Addison Apisarnthanarax, Jessica Wong, Alara Bozkurt

  • Objective: Create a website, showcase artwork, and provide additional information.

  • Technologies used: simple HTML, CSS, bootstrap, and jquery to design and add functionality.

  • Breakdown of tasks and roles: Addison coded the side navigation bar. Jessica helped make the cards for the art to go into. Alara helped with CSS, overall HTM, and the top navigation bar.

  • Challenges: We struggled to code the side nav and the top nav together without overlapping each other. We continued to struggle with making them useable with javascript and making the CSS look presentable. We also had trouble making the information with the art dropdown.

  • Successes: We included the top and the side nav bar with no significant problem, and the CSS looks cleaner than before.

I strongly recommend attending this course if you want to understand the underlying technology behind the front end wen development, Even if you use some web site hosting platforms like Square space ( like I do ), Weebly, WordPress or others, this will help you customize your pages beyond pre-canned templates these sites offer,

You also get a a brag sheet or certificate of completion (see below) after you successfully complete the camp,

I hope this was helpful.
