Volunteer and Tutor, National Honor Society

When we talk about giving back to the community, we often think of grand gestures or significant monetary donations. But sometimes, the most impactful actions come from devoting time, energy, and passion. My experience as a tutor and volunteer with the National Honor Society (NHS) is a testament to the profound difference a few dedicated hours each week can make.

From 2021 to the present day, I have been dedicating approximately two hours every week during the school year, spread across grades 10th, 11th, and 12th, to tutor younger students. My primary focus has been on 9th and 10th graders, particularly those with ADHD and Dyslexia related learning disabilities. It's been a privilege to offer customized tutoring services, zeroing in on critical areas of study such as fundamental algebra and geometry concepts, as well as enhancing fine arts capabilities.

My approach has always been to provide consistent and effective support strategies tailored to the unique needs of each student. Most dyslexic kids require the same concept to be verbally read out, presented from a different angle or sometimes drawn out. The joy of witnessing the tangible results of these efforts is unparalleled. On average, my mentees have seen a commendable increase of 20% in their math grades. The journey wasn't always smooth, but the smiles and newfound confidence of these students made every challenge worth it.

But my volunteering journey wasn't confined solely to the classroom. Recognizing that development extends beyond academics, I also became actively involved in facilitating outdoor and indoor activities for a diverse group of campers at Camp Buckaroo, Greater Seals of Houston. This camp, a haven for children with cerebral palsy and Down syndrome, provided an opportunity for them to engage, interact, and grow in a supportive environment.

At Camp Buckaroo, my primary role was to ensure these children had a memorable experience, contributing to both their personal and social development. It was a transformative experience for me, understanding the different ways in which we can touch lives and make a difference.

Every hour spent as a tutor and volunteer with the NHS has reinforced my belief in the power of community, compassion, and commitment. It's taught me that when we invest time in nurturing others, we're not just helping them grow—we're evolving, learning, and transforming ourselves in the process.

To anyone contemplating giving back in whatever capacity they can, I say this: the rewards, though intangible, are boundless. And the impact you make today might just shape a brighter future for someone tomorrow.
